FACTS: Pictures Affect Children

People have asked me for specific quotes they could use to show that harm is done to children from exposure to sexual material. Here are some:

JoAnn Hamilton: "PICTURES TEACH!! Teachers use them in kindergarten through college. We don't need statistics to see this. It is common knowledge. Modest pictures teach modesty. Immodest pictures teach immodesty. What do sexual images teach?"

Judith Reisman, author, lecturer, lecturer, who testified before the U.S. Senate Committee: In 3/10 of a second a child sees an inappropriate image in a checkout line. The child had no choice. The parent had no choice and yet that image will influence that child's thinking for the rest of his/her life.

Rory C. Reid, MSW in a letter to Women for Decency, January 25, 2003: "One of the greatest tragedies is when children are exposed to these magazines (sexual magazines) just because they ‘were shopping with their parents' Parents that take their children grocery shopping should not have to consider the risks of being exposed to inappropriate material, in all places, at the checkout stand."

Dr. Victor B. Cline, Pornography's Effects on Adults and Children, p. 11: "In a study reported to the 1986 Attorney General's Commission on Pornography by Dr. Jennings Bryant, 600 American males and females of junior high school age and above were interviewed about their ‘out in real life involvement with pornography.' He found that 91% of the males and 82% of the females admitted having been exposed to X-rated, hardcore pornography. Two-thirds of the males and 40% of the females reported wanting to try out some of the sexual behaviors they had witnessed. And, among high school students, 31% of the males and 18% of the females admitted actually doing some of the things sexually they had seen in the pornography within a few days after exposure. This clearly suggests the modeling-effect or imitative-learning effect, as well as ‘triggering effect,' that even non-violent pornography has on human sexual behavior in some individuals."

Final Report of the Attorney General's Commission on Pornography, 1986, p. xii: Dr. James Dobson is quoted in this report: "A growing number of children are finding their parents' sexually explicit videos and magazines and are experimenting with what they have learned on younger children. Obviously, obscenity cannot be permitted to flow freely through the veins of society without reaching the eyes and ears of children . . . . Raising healthy children is the primary occupation of families and anything which invades the childhoods and twists the minds of boys and girls must be seen as abhorrent to the mothers and fathers who gave them birth."

Final Report of the Attorney General's Commission on Pornography, 1986, p. 265: "Cook and Fosen (1970) found that among their sample of incarcerated sex offenders and criminal offenders, the latter reported higher rates of exposure to pornography during pre-adolescence and adolescence."

Final Report of the Attorney General's Commission on Pornography, 1986, p. 289: "What do we know at this point?

"It is clear that many sexually explicit materials, particularly of the commercial variety, that are obviously designed to be arousing, are, in fact, arousing, both to offenders and non-offenders."

" If learning—both pro-social and antisocial—occurs from various depictions, and there certainly is clear evidence of both, the need for strategies that implicate the same learning principles must be evaluated."

Final Report of the Attorney General's Commission on Pornography, 1986, p. 289, 290 entitled Summary of Commission Findings of Harm From Pornography:

"Social Science Evidence. Negative effects were found to have been demonstrated."

"Totality of Evidence. Harm found in all sub-tiers:
1. Acceptance of Rape Myth; "Moral, Ethical and Cultural. Harm found." See strengthenthefamily.net.
